A WORK IN PROGRESS
How well can anyone know somebody else? Wait, stop. That, right there, is classic me: this section is supposed to be about me, and here I am asking you questions. Alright then, here’s some things about me:
I like art
Art is notoriously hard to define, and communicates at a level that is difficult to express in words. Liking art doesn’t mean I understand it, but I enjoy pondering an artwork and letting my mind go in deep.
I run a YouTube channel called Art meets Geoff which gives my reactions to great works of art. These videos are als0 shown in the Art section of this site.
I paint pictures
I paint pictures for reasons I can’t explain. Maybe it’s communication. Maybe it’s to try to produce a glimpse into the inexplicable. My late father (an artist himself) told me after one of my paintings that I could now call myself an artist. Not totally comfortable with that, but I will attempt to grow into it. Anyway, I like to paint.
I like photography
Photography is like magic – a technology to capture a time and place, even a mood. Old photos are time machines. Good photos communicate. Artist David Hockney has drawn strong parallels between art and photography, claiming that the spirit of photography (the drive to represent life through painting and the other arts) is far older than photographic technology.
I like thinking
I find the world, history, places, economics, the environment, maths, science, technology – and more – endlessly fascinating. Of course I have formed opinions and assembled a worldview. My thoughts are subject to change – or else I have stopped learning. I like to keep my views rooted in evidence and always subject to evaluating and responding to new information. My opinions are of course, mine and do not represent anyone else or any other organisation.
Experience has taught me that not everyone likes to hear my viewpoints. But that’s alright: we don’t have to agree on everything.
I run a blog on climate matters called Climate Thinking.
Personally:
I had an experience of God when I was fourteen years old, which has never left me and underpins my worldview. My church is the Revival Centres Church.
I’m married, with four children and seven grandchildren. I live in marvellous Melbourne, Australia.
“A work of art which did not begin in emotion is not art.”
“It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.”
“Art is never finished, only abandoned.”
“For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face.”
