Beggs – The light is for creation

The model, Elizabeth Beggs, is working on one of her watercolours in the light-filled corner of the upstairs studio. The beautiful dappled and filtered light encourages creation.

I decided to attempt more abstract brushstrokes, to trick the mind into seeing texture. I worked hard on getting the values right (mostly), and less on getting the colours exact. By focusing on the values, I learned that the white chest of drawers was actually a dark grey in spots – something I would not have seen except I was looking at the values and hues, not the object of the “white drawers”. I also enjoyed getting the dappled effect of the light.
